Projects » Young refugees and asylum seekers in Barnet, UK
Refugee Youth Project currently works in the London borough of Barnet to deliver a support and activity project for refugee and asylum-seeking young people in the borough.
The beneficiaries are young people aged 11-18 from refugee or asylum-seeking families or unaccompanied minors seeking asylum themselves. Young refugees and asylum seekers are one of the most vulnerable groups of people in Britain today. Many have lived through trauma and persecution in their own countries and have often been separated from family and friends.
Since October 2005 Refugee Youth Project has worked in partnership with many other schools, college's and organisations to deliver a support and activity project for refugee and asylum seeking students in London Borough of Barnet. This project engages refugee and asylum seeking students in identifying support gaps in terms of out of school and holiday activities and works with young people to plan and deliver appropriate support and activities. The sessions are staffed by the project’s manager and volunteers.
Refugee Youth Project has run a four week Summer Activity project since 2006. This project provides activities for 30-50 young refugees and asylum seekers each year, who are able to take part in workshops including drama, cookery and music as well as going on a number of trips, such as to the seaside and theme parks.
Refugee Youth Project currently works in partnership with Whitefield School to run a peer-mentoring project with young refugees and asylum seekers in Barnet which was established in 2009. This project enables 16 - 18 year olds who have been in the UK for at least a year to mentor newly arrived young people. Young mentors are provided thorough and accredited training. Refugee Youth Project provides a structured and supportive setting to allow the mentoring relationships to develop.
Refugee Youth Project currently runs an after-school club on Tuesday's after-school. The club takes place at Whitefield school and is open to all young people from refugee and asylum seeking backgrounds. Activities include henna workshops, karaoke, table football, pool-table and homework support, among many others.
Refugee Youth Project is currently working in partnership with Barnet Refugee Service to run a girl's group in Barnet for young women aged 11-18 on Monday afternoons after-school at the West Hendon Community Centre
